This book developed out of multiple discussions with Les Wilson over the years concerning the need to have a focused investigation on one eukaryotic organism for the study of problems in cell biology. The field of biochemistry has advanced rapidly in large part by focusing on Escherichia coli and certain bacteriophages in the past three decades. Since then, more complex eukaryotic biological problems, such as membrane shuttling, cell motility, chemotaxis, cell-cell recognition, and development and pattern formation, have been studied in a wide variety of cell types. This diversity is very important for many reasons, including the fact that no one eukaryotic organism has emerged that is as suitable as E. coli has been to the biochemists. However, there are many benefits that derive from a large number of scientists studying the same organism from multiple points of view.
