Complex carbohydrates are often subjected to different chemical modifications in order to gain information on sequences and anomeric configurations. Methylation analysis has proved to be valuable for following the results of such modifications. The following modifications will be discussed: partial acid hydrolysis, carboxyl reduction of uronic acids, N-deacetylation and deamination of materials containing 2-acetamido-2-deoxyhexosyl residues, chromium trioxide oxidation of acetylated carbohydrates, Smith degradation, and degradation of car- bohydrates containing uronic acid residues. Another specific degradation, based upon oxidation followed by fl-elimination, is treated in a separate article
